Though the upcoming devices will not be developed by Nokia itself, but HMD Global will be developing it. HMD Global also have some talented decision makers from Nokia. According to the agreement, HMD will handle development of mobile phones and tablets running on Android OS under the control of Nokia. The extent of collaboration between the two companies is not very clear but it seems like Nokia will be having control over many aspects of the upcoming products. Nokia will also have control over product quality which is a good thing for Nokia lovers. Yes, we know your N73 is still running flawlessly. In the press release, it has been quoted that Nokia will take a seat in Board of Directors and will also have control over various things. You can read the full version of the press release here.

Nokia Technologies will take a seat on the Board of Directors of HMD and set mandatory brand requirements and performance related provisions to ensure that all Nokia-branded products exemplify consumer expectations of Nokia devices, including quality, design and consumer-focused innovation.

It needs to be pointed out that Nokia can’t use its brand on smartphones until Q4 2016, because of the acquisition of its devices and services division by Microsoft. Earlier this year, Nokia announced that it intends to get back in the smartphone business by licensing designs to hardware manufacturers.
Though there is no official word on this smartphone but we pretty much know all about this phone through leaked sources. This phone is expected by the quarter end of 2016. According to the specs, it is expected to be a mid-range device. It has got some nice set of specification on paper.

Nokia C1 Performance

Image of Nokia C1 Front and Back

Under the hood, Nokia C1 has got a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 octa-core CPU and Adreno 510 GPU. It is a new 64-bit chipset which was recently introduced by Qualcomm. Basically, its amid-range chipset but the performance is like high-end chipsets. It has got a clock speed of 1.8GHz. This processor is a beast in terms of performance and the performance is pretty much comparable to Snapdragon 810 chipset.

It can run any high to mid end games effortlessly. The best thing about this chipset is that it doesn’t get overheated while doing heavy tasks or while playing any graphics intensive games unlike snapdragon 810. This chipset has got 4 cortex A72 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and 4 cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz.

Talking about synthetic benchmark scores, it can easily score upto 70,000 on Antutu Benchmark v6.0, 1400 of single core score and 4800 of the multi-core score on Geekbench 3. It almost beats the snapdragon 810 in the benchmark scores. The app launch time on this device will be comparatively faster than snapdragon 810 devices due to that cortex A72 CPU.

Apart from this, Nokia C1 will be featured with a 3GB of RAM. The 3GB of RAM will be sufficient for day-to-day usage and multitasking. Since it’s a Nokia device, we don’t expect much of bloatware here. Less bloatware means there’ll be no unnecessary apps running in the background and there will be a good amount of free RAM.

Though today we see devices with 4GB and 6GB of RAM but since it’s a mid-range device, expecting a 4GB of RAM and above will be a stupid thing. 3GB of RAM is like perfect for a mid-range device. You can easily get around 1.5GB and above of free RAM.

On the internal storage side, Nokia C1 has got a 32GB of internal storage. Though there is no confirmation on the expandable storage option but we expect it to come with a micro-sd card slot. Out of 32GB, there will be easily 25GB and above of free space. 32GB is kind of okay for all the multimedia storage and app storage. Though if you are that kind of guy who loves to keep

Though if you are that kind of guy who loves to keep a lot of HD- videos in your devices and use his cam to shoot videos, then you may run out of space. But assuming that it will be having a card slot, the 32GB of storage should be fine for all our multimedia contents. We shouldn’t expect a 64GB of internal storage in a mid-range device because that will cause a gradual increase in price.

Nokia C1 Front Image

On the software front, it’s quite obvious that it will be running on the latest Android OS Marshmallow (6.0). Though, it will be skinned by Nokia’s own UI called Z launcher UI. We also have news that it will be having Windows 10 for the selected markets but that’s not official so we can’t say much on it. The Z launcher UI offers a vanilla android experience beyond the addition of Nokia Z launcher.

The UI aims to make the things quicker and convenient to find and open applications like you can scribble a letter on the home screen and it will pull up content relevant to that letter. The home screen is Nokia’s Z Launcher, which is built around the idea of handwriting recognition as the way to find the app you need.

Though, you will get a stock android experience across setting menu, notification panel, lock screen, multitasking tray and etc. Though it looks pretty much stock at most of the places apart from the launcher.

Nokia C1 will be sported by a 5.5 inch Full-HD (1080p) LCD IPS display panel with 401 pixels per inch density. It is expected more likely to have a clear black display like every other Nokia device with 80.9% screen-to-body ratio. The screen indeed will be quite sharp and vibrant and the 80.9 screen to body ratio makes it more appealing.

Nokia C1 Camera

Nokia C1 has got good sets of cameras. The rear side is equipped with a 13MP F/2.0 camera with a dual-tone LED flash and an 8MP camera on the front side. We expect the cameras to have Carl Zeiss lens which is pretty common on Nokia devices but still we aren’t sure of this, Because of Carl Zeiss Lens technology license issues.

The rear cam will be capable of shooting 4K videos as it has a snapdragon 652 chipset. Though we don’t expect OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) at this price, we think that it will be having EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) which will help to shoot smooth videos even with shaky hands.

The front cam is an 8MP shooter and would be able to capture great and detailed selfies. It also would be able to shoot Full-HD (1080p) videos through front camera. We also expect the rear cam to have PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) for a pretty quick focus to the objects. Nokia also offers some good set of features in its camera app.

It will be having the basic option like HDR, panorama, beautification mode and etc. Apart from this, it is also expected to have some cool filters. Since Nokia has always been a good performer when it comes to camera performance, we expect that the cameras will be really good.

Nokia C1 will be backed by a 3,290mAh capacity of the battery. It will also be having the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. So it should charge upto 50% with the charge of 30 minutes which will be amazing. The 3290mAh of the battery will be sufficient for the 5.5-inch display and should easily give a screen-on-time of 4 hours. It will be having Type-C USB just like Nokia N1 most probably. The quick charger will come with the box. Nokia has always been a performer when it comes to battery and I hope that it doesn’t disappoint us. Though the battery here will be non-removable and will be sealed inside the phone.

Connectivity and Sensors

It will be a 4G device with a dual SIM support most probably. It will support all the LTE bands and VOLTE (Voice over LTE). Apart from this, it will also be having all the basic connectivity options like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot, GPS, USB OTG, and etc. On the sensors front, it will have all the basic sensors like accelerometer, proximity, compass, gyroscope and etc.

Look and Feel

Nokia C1 Concept image

As per the leaks, it is expected to have a full-metal unibody construction. It’s 8.0mm thick device and looks quite appealing and eye-candy. The phone looks quite neat and clean with minimalistic design. The back is totally clean with just camera and a flash at the back. On the front, there’s is nothing much apart from the display, front camera, and earpiece. It has got an on-screen button and the loudspeaker lies on the bottom. There’s a Nokia logo on the bottom-rear side.

The volume button is on the right side of the phone with split button design. The sim slot is most probably on the left side of the phone and the USB is on the bottom as most of the phones. Overall the phone looks quite eye-candy and indeed it’s a good design.

Nokia C1 Release Date, Launch, and Availability

There’s no official word on the launch of the Nokia C1 but most probably it will be launched somewhere around the end of September month this year. Since Nokia can’t use its brand on smartphones until Q4 2016, the official launch can be delayed as well. Nokia is showing no sign for announcing the launch date but rumors keep hinting about it. So we aren’t certain of the dates but we expect it before the end of this year.

The brand name Nokia itself is a big addition to this phone with sweet sets of hardware. The price of Nokia C1 is expected to be around 249US$ (INR 15,000). The Phone will first launch in the USA, India, and China after a month, it will release in the Europian market and some other Asian countries.

It’s a quite good deal if it’s offered for this price tag but again we aren’t sure of it. So for the real conclusion, we have to wait for the official launch and official announcement of this phone, before that we can’t say much about it.

This phone offers quite a good amount of features but these things aren’t official and we are just assuming it be as per the leaked sources. Things can still get changed by the official launch. So believing the sources, this phone has got quite a lot to offer. The snapdragon 652, 3GB of RAM, the cameras, and the metal unibody design makes the phone quite a good device. Though we would have appreciated the features like a fingerprint sensor and a slightly larger camera but still things aren’t bad.
